Before I moved to Italy, I was in need of a book to read whilst on the long flight from the UK. I searched a few bookshops to no avail but by happenstance whilst on a neighbourhood walk I came across a jumble sale where two kids were selling some books, and amongst them was Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
I’ve occasionally had it where a book has changed my life. When I read my first Agatha Christie and became enthralled in the mystery genre, when I read Coraline and couldn’t sleep (Fuck you Neil, for more reasons than that), but I’ve never had it where a book has left me almost unable to describe how I felt. Twilight was able to do that.
I finished this book with a nice cup of hot chocolate in my favourite café in Turin the night before I was to leave for Rome, and the sudden wave of emotions I felt was insane. I loved the story, the characters, the setting, the pacing. I loved how awkward and realistic the conversations the two protagonists had were. Most of all though, I love how for my first few weeks of living in a country that I barely spoke the language of, whenever I was scared or sad I had Twilight to turn to.
I can’t wait to read the second book, and I hope it arrives soon! To be thrown back into that world is all I really want right now. Well, that and a really attractive vampire boyfriend, but that seems a little less likely… I think?
